SHOULD YOU GO ON A SKINCARE DIET?

The Marie Kondo effect has been heard around the world since her eponymous show debuted on Netflix - if something doesn’t spark joy, get rid of it. The philosophy, though simple, has proved to be revolutionary, moving out of the home and into an entire lifestyle movement. It’s official; minimalism is back.

For millennials and many more, pairing back is a response to the current climate of sustainability; we are reconsidering excess and opting for a more conscientious consumerism. The beauty industry is no stranger to over-consumption, with many of us fixated on 10-step korean-inspired skincare routines.

“Skincare routines that have that many steps are not necessarily beneficial. In fact, they can often lead to product build-up, causing congestion, inflammation and irritation,” says 111SKIN founder Dr. Yannis. “10 steps can be too many for the skin to process and subsequently inhibit the epidermis’ ability to self-heal.”

The trick to reducing your routine is to analyse your skin and focus on active, multi-functional products that are right for you - a particular advantage stepping into spring, when your skincare should be paired down and lightened anyway.

THE ESSENTIALS

STEP 1.
THE CLEANSER HYBRID

Cleansing is the most essential part of any routine, hands down. It removes makeup, bacteria and pollution accumulated during the day, helping to strip away any toxins that can cause congestion or free-radical damage. When combined with exfoliating ingredients such as alpha-hydroxy acids and fruit enzymes, the cleanser not only cleans the skin but renews it too.

STEP 2.
THE POTENT SERUM

The step that really treats your skin, a serum or booster is traditionally higher in active ingredients and focuses on righting issues like dehydration (with Hyaluronic Acid), pigmentation (with Vitamin C) and congestion (with Salicylic Acid). By targeting just one issue at a time and not overloading on products, the skin can properly process the ingredients and produce more efficient results.

STEP 3.
THE CURATED MOISTURISER

This is where it gets tricky. While moisturisers are very important for skin health (epidermal cells need ample amounts of water to properly function) they can also be problematic. Like Step 2, it is important to properly determine what you need. Do you have dry, sensitive skin? Go for a heavy viscosity. Perhaps you have a thicker, oily complexion? Try a lighter gel.

STEP 4.
THE DAYLIGHT PROTECTOR

SPF - no matter when or where - is a universal must. UV rays are the leading cause of skin damage worldwide, responsible for everything from pigmentation to premature ageing. A little goes a long way, so you can be sparing but application; just keep it on you for a midday top-up.

At 111SKIN, we really advocate efficacious products that produce a multitude of skincare solutions. It’s not about how much you buy but about what you do and how you use it. If you are unsure of how to edit your routine or even what products you should purchase, our online experts are here to help.
