Your Complete Guide To Exfoliation

As we age cell turnover slows down, leading to a build-up of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin and a dull, lacklustre complexion. This is why regular exfoliation is so important, and the right type of routine will give you give radiant, glowing skin. However the results we see after an exfoliating session means we often get hooked on the product, and in the effort to recreate these results we find ourselves exfoliating much more frequently than recommended. To prevent yourself from doing more harm than good, follow our complete guide to exfoliation.

  1. Once A Week Is Enough
Or twice if your skin is oily. The thing to remember with exfoliation is less is more. Certain skin types should be particularly cautious of over exfoliating; for those with sensitive skin over-exfoliation can lead to increased sensitivity and irritation, for those with darker skin it can lead to post-inflammatory pigmentation and it can also aggravate breakouts for those who are acne-prone.

  2. Stick To Gentle Ingredients
Large, hard particles can cause micro tears in the skin, they’re not visible to the eye but cause damage all the same. Surface abrasions can result in larger pores, and it can invite bacteria and debris into the skin. The Lift Off Exfoliating Cleanser is instead formulated with three deep-cleansing, non-irritating acids, tartaric acid, lactic acid and papaya enzyme. These gently slough off dead skin cells and improve circulation for a radiant glow.

  3. Avoid Loofahs
Traditional facial scrubbers can sometimes be irritating, particularly to those with sensitive skin. They can also become a breeding ground for bacteria, and applying this to your face can lead to further irritation and, potentially, breakouts. The best thing is just to apply your exfoliating product with damp, clean fingers and gently massage into your skin.

  4. Give Your Product Time
You can’t rush your exfoliation by simply scrubbing the skin harder as this will actually cause damage. In fact if you do this, you may notice that your skin is red and feels warm after washing the product off. If you’re in need of deeper exfoliation, exfoliate for longer instead of harder. Apply the product to clean, damp skin and massage gently for at least 60 seconds.
