A short guide
If you’re fanatical about skin care, or just curious about the wide array of anti-aging products, you will have heard the word “peptides” coming up in the list of ingredients. But what are peptides, and how do they help your skin? Are they important?
Peptides are chains of amino acids, which are neither big enough nor complex enough to count as proteins. They act in a number of different ways – as neurotransmitters, as hormones – and have been claimed to perform a variety of miracles from enhancing athletic performance to reversing the effects of aging.
The Three Most Common Peptides in skincare
- The first group are those which are suggested to stimulate collagen production.
- Secondly, there are copper containing peptides. These have been shown to reduce inflammation, but can also be irritant to some skin types.
- Lastly, there are the group known as neuro-peptides, which claim to relax facial muscles and have a similar effect to botulinum toxin when used for prolonged periods.
Most peptides used in skin preparations bind moisture, making it more easily available to the dermis.
It is important to appreciate that no single ingredient of any skincare product alone is a cure for ageing. Our own products at 111SKIN contain a patented combination of three basic ingredients, as well as a variety of other compounds with proven properties.
